Memorial Day events abound today in Mahoning County

•AUSTINTOWN — The Austintown Memorial Day event will kick off at 10 a.m. with a parade leaving the Marc’s parking lot on Mahoning Avenue and traveling south down Idaho Road to the school campus. The parade will end in front of Fitch High School for a ceremony featuring guest speaker and former Fitch graduate Col. Matthew Balint, Army Special Forces.

• BEAVER TOWNSHIP — A prayer service is scheduled for the veterans memorial in the township cemetery at the corner of state Routes 164 and 165 in North Lima at 11 a.m. Guest speaker will be Lt. Col. Scott Allen, chief public affairs officer for the 910th Airlift Wing out of the Youngstown Air Reserve Station in Vienna.

• BOARDMAN — The 119th Memorial Day parade hosted by Boardman Kiwanis Club will begin at 10 a.m. at Boardman Center Intermediate School on Market Street and will proceed north to U.S. Route 224, then head east to Boardman Township Park. There will be a program honoring veterans following the parade at the Maag Outdoor Amphitheater with the landing of a Black Hawk helicopter. In the event of rain, the service will be at 10 a.m. in the Boardman Center Intermediate School auditorium.

•CANFIELD — The featured speaker for the ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday at the Veterans Plaza on the Canfield North Green will be Leo Connelly of the Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission. Following the ceremony at the Veterans Plaza, there will be a procession to the Canfield East Cemetery where a second brief ceremony will honor deceased Canfield veterans. Participants then will return to the Canfield War Vets Museum, where a final ceremony will be held to honor individuals whose names have been added to the Wall of Honor.

• LAKE MILTON — The Memorial Day parade will start lining up at 10 a.m. in the parking lot of the Mahoning Avenue boat launch ramp and end at the American Legion Post 737 parking lot off Milton Avenue. Grand marshal will be Joseph Bonanno, 101, who served in the Army during World War II under General George Patton. Parade begins at 11 a.m. Theme is “Stars and Stripes Forever.”

• POLAND — At 9:15 a.m. Monday, Sons of the American Legion will conduct its annual Four Chaplains ceremony at the War Memorial Building Post 15 home, 35 Cortland St. At 10 a.m., the Memorial Day procession will depart from Post 15, and travel down College Street, turn right on South Main Street, where a ceremony for those lost at sea will take place 10:15 a.m. on the Main Street Bridge. The procession will continue on South Main, turning left onto Riverside Drive and into historic Riverside Cemetery for ceremonies. Keynote speaker will be Vietnam War veteran Dan Rivers.

•YOUNGSTOWN — A Smoky Hollow Memorial Service will be at 11:15 a.m. at the corner of North Walnut Street and Rayen Avenue. Refreshments will be served after the service at Yosteria on Valley Street.
