Man accused of assaulting and robbing officer arraigned

YOUNGSTOWN — Zachary R. Crespo, 35, of Norquest Boulevard, Austintown, was arraigned Tuesday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court in the attack of a Beaver Township police officer that left the officer injured.

A not guilty plea was entered for him, but Magistrate Nicole Alexander did not address bond because Crespo is already serving a Mahoning County jail sentence of 130 days handed down last week in a different court. The judge handling Crespo’e case will address bond at a later hearing, said Mike Yacovone, county assistant prosecutor.

Crespo was indicted last week on charges of felonious assault, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary and gun specifications. Crespo could get about 15 years in prison on each of those charges.

The victim of the alleged felonious assault and aggravated robbery is Beaver Township police officer Vincent Arquilla, according to Crespo’s indictments. The victim of the alleged burglary is the resident of a home on Old Hickory Court in Beaver Township, where the police officer’s injury occurred.

The officer responded to a call of domestic dispute May 12 when the officer was “jumped” in a garage and his firearm was taken, police said. Crespo fled the home, but was captured later by police.
