Austintown man charged in assault on police officer

BEAVER TOWNSHIP -- An Austintown man has been booked into the Mahoning County jail and is expected to be arraigned Tuesday on charges in connection with an altercation that led to a law enforcement officer being injured and hospitalized.

Zachary R. Crespo, 35, has been s with felonious assault on a peace officer and theft of a firearm, according to a report from the Beaver Township Police Department.

The altercation occurred late Friday after police responded to a home on Old Hickory Court.

Beaver Township police Chief Eric Datillo noted that multiple local, county, state and federal agencies assisted in the investigation of the crime and in Crespo's arrest.

The name of the injured officer has not been released. Datillo said the officer was not shot and is expected to recover.

Crespo was arrested after several hours of negotiations with law enforcement officials, according the the police chief.

He is expected to be arraigned in Mahoning County Court in Canfield at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The Mahoning County Prosecutor's Office is reviewing police reports and is expected to file additional charges during Tuesday's court appearance.

"Beaver Police Department would like to thank all local, county, state and federal agencies that assisted us in the incident," Datillo stated in a news release. "The manpower, leadership, knowledge, and training were instrumental in bringing this matter to a peaceful conclusion."
