CANFIELD -- City council voted unanimously to remove a previously-required setback for construction on B-3 (business) lots.
The move this week came as a way to be fair to property owners in some areas of Canfield.
The old city ordinance required a 50-foot setback for any structure in the city's B-3 district. While it worked for some areas, properties around the Village Green and on Main Street would find it difficult to meet that requirement.
The issue came from Canfield Planning and Zoning Commission, which voted on April 13 to recommend dropping the requirement.
"The ordinance would not set a new setback," said acting city manager and police Chief Chuck Colucci. "It would eliminate a set back altogether."
A public hearing was held on Wednesday prior to the regular council meeting, where the setback requirement was eliminated from the city ordinance by unanimous vote.
On another matter, Colucci reported that the police department is continuing to try to work things out with the board of education regarding the placement of a school resource officer in every building.
At present, the police department has a SRO at the high school and at the middle school. Each occasionally visits the elementary schools.
"We are trying for a federal grant that would provide 75 percent funding for three years, for two more SROs," Colucci said.
He said the department has been down in number of officers for some time due to high standards. "We turn down a lot of potential hires because they don't meet those standards," he said.
Council also voted to approve the replat of Lots 942 and 1219 into Lot 1373 by EIS Holdings. The replat involves the property at 454 Lisbon St.
"They are planning a 17,000-square-foot addition to their present building," Colucci said.
The replat was recommended by Canfield Planning and Zoning during its April 13 meeting.
