Hubbard students raise $7,000 to aid relief effort

HUBBARD — Hubbard students were able to raise more than $7,000 for the Brightside Project to help families in East Palestine affected by last month’s train derailment.

The Hubbard Board of Education on Monday recognized the group Neighbors for Neighbors, which is six sophomores in the Career and Community Class who organized a benefit dinner to help the Brightside Project.

Students are Makenzie Pickard, Jillian Palumbo, Malia Hivner, Alexis Craft, Gianna Rotunno and Lily Hoffman.

“The Brightside Project’s goal is to help meet the basic needs of children in East Palestine through food, clothing and basic care items. The students wanted to help the children meet their social and emotional needs through mentorship and love,” said Superintendent Raymond Soloman.

He said the six students were able to raise more than $7,000.

Also recognized was Hailee Squibbs, who organized a benefit dinner at the Gentry to support the American Foundation for Suicide Awareness and Prevention.

She was able to raise more than $2,000 at the dinner, which had 35 baskets and gift cards for a raffle and a bake sale.

Soloman said Squibbs had a family member who died in 2017.
