52 animals rescued at Ohio Avenue home

YOUNGSTOWN — Animal Charity of Boardman responded to a home in the 1600 block of Ohio Avenue on Tuesday after the Youngstown Fire Department was called there for a possible carbon-monoxide problem and discovered 52 animals.

Animal Charity said the animals were living in some of the worst conditions the agency had ever seen. Animal Charity took possession of the animals.

There were eight dogs, a tortoise, three endangered turtles, two ferrets, three guinea pigs, two hedgehogs, four rabbits, one bearded dragon, four snakes, two axolotl, 15 fish, two foxes, two turkeys and two raccoons. Fourteen of the animals were dead.

Charges are pending in the case, according to Animal Charity’s Facebook page. They did not provide any information on what will happen to the animals, but said it takes time to work through such issues.

The Youngstown Fire Department responded to the North Side home at 10:10 a.m. regarding carbon monoxide issues. The readings were normal, but they found lots of animals and raw sewage 1 to 2 inches deep in the basement and no installed heating in the home. The home was being warmed with torpedo heaters.

There also was damage to the home’s exterior on the second floor, according to a Youngstown Fire Department report.

The home appeared to be uninhabitable because of extensive animal waste, utility issues and structural concerns. Firefighters were at the scene about an hour.

The Animal Charity Facebook page stated that firefighters treated two residents who had passed out.

It added that some of the animals will need specialized veterinary care from someone who specializes in exotic species.

The animals were “everywhere,” and they needed veterinary care “urgently,” Animal Charity stated. The organization is in “desperate need of donations at this time for veterinary care and specialty diets for most of the animals.”

An organization called Rebel Rescue is housing the foxes and turkeys, Animal Charity stated.

The Mahoning County Dog Warden’s Office helped with the rescue of the animals, and Youngstown’s zoning department made the initial call to Animal Charity seeking its help, Animal Charity said.
