Updated filing adds rape charge

Man accused of killing ex-girlfriend at Austintown apartment

YOUNGSTOWN — A Mahoning County grand jury has handed down a superseding indictment against Steve W. Green II that adds a rape and attempted rape charge to his earlier aggravated murder charge.

The indictment now alleges Green, 26, also raped or attempted to rape Ashley Lockhart, 25, on Oct. 8, 2021, the day he is accused of killing her.

Another new charge is extortion, which alleges that Green attempted to gain “any valuable thing or valuable benefit” by threatening to commit any offense of violence” namely murder or domestic violence, on or about Oct. 1, 2021, to Oct. 8, 2021.

Prosecutors allege that text messages in the days prior to Lockhart’s killing indicate Green was threatening to kill her if she did not have sex with him. Lockhart was the mother of Green’s child, and they had been in a relationship for many years but broke up about a year earlier, a close friend of Lockhart has said.

Green was found competent last May to stand trial last year. And in December, Judge Anthony D’Apolito of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court ruled against a motion to suppress evidence from the case.

Green’s attorney, Mark Lavelle, argued that Green was not capable of making a voluntary waiver of his rights to remain silent because he blacked out at one point that night and took the drug Xanax, but the judge ruled Green demonstrated sufficient awareness of what he was doing to waive his right to silence.

Green is accused of killing Lockhart, of Youngstown, outside of an apartment building on Compass West Drive in Austintown late Oct. 8, 2021. Lockhart was on the phone with an Austintown dispatcher asking for help at the time.

The grand jury also issued a superseding indictment against Michael W. Vanhorn, 36, of Lake Park Road in Sebring. He was indicted in March on one count of rape and eight other charges. This time, he is indicted on nine counts of rape, plus eight other charges.

Kara Vanhorn, 32, also of the Lake Park Road address, is indicted on two counts of child endangering and single counts of corrupting another with drugs, contributing to the unruliness or delinquency of a child and failure to comply with underage alcohol laws.
