HUBBARD -- The Ohio State Highway Patrol is looking for any information on who struck and killed a Masury man in the eastbound lane of Interstate 80 on Wednesday.
The lane was closed for a period Wednesday after the body of Tyler Estep, 28, was found off the side of the roadway.
The patrol received a report of a pedestrian struck about 7 a.m. near the Seifert Lewis Road overpass in Hubbard Township.
According to a patrol report, the initial investigation revealed that Estep was driving a maroon 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo on I-80 east when his vehicle ran out of gasoline. It's believed Estep was struck by a passing commercial vehicle sometime between 6:45 a.m. and 7 a.m. as he stood outside his vehicle filling the tank with gasoline. Troopers noted a shoe also was found in the road.
According to a Trumbull County 911 report, the discovery was made by a passerby. The caller told dispatchers the body was near a "jug, like they were putting gas in the car."
The patrol alerted township police to check the truck stops at the Hubbard exit to see if any semis in that area had front-end damage. Trucking companies in Brookfield also were being checked as well as the rest areas near the Pennsylvania border. The search did not come up with any suspicious vehicles that may have been involved, the report states.
The Trumbull County Coroner's Office was notified and will rule on the death.
Troopers were assisted at the scene by the Hubbard Township Fire Department, Hubbard Township Police Department, Ohio Department of Transportation and the coroner's office.
