Woman says ex hit her

Police take man to hospital

YOUNGSTOWN — Police called on the Mahoning Valley Crisis Response team and its armored vehicle Bear to a home on North Hartford Avenue on Monday night after a woman called 911 to report that her ex-boyfriend had assaulted her in the head with a lamp and fired a gun.

Police were called to the home in the first block of Hartford at 10:59 p.m. by a woman, 32, of Boardman. She said they had been living together on Hartford, but they broke up and she left. She said he picked her up that night so they could “work things out,” according to a police report. But they argued and the man told her he would shoot anyone who came to pick her up, including the police.

When officers arrived, they saw the woman had a bloody lip with blood on her cheek. She complained of pain on the back of her head, but officers could not see any injury there because of her hair.

Police tried to locate the man by calling his cellphone. The man answered and told police he was no longer on Hartford, but police “pinged” his phone and determined he was still at the home on Hartford. Officers determined the man was inside a back door with a snow blower blocking it closed.

Police told the man they were not leaving, but the man said he was paralyzed. Police considered the assault, a third party mentioning the gunfire and people in the house not coming out, so officers called the crisis response team to come to the scene. Using armored car Bear, officers were able to determine the man was just behind the front door.

Officers took him into custody. Officers found a handgun in the home’s basement, as well as a marijuana grow, which was confiscated. Officers took the man to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for an evaluation. He had not left the hospital as of the time the police report was written, but police intended to charge the man with assaulting the woman.

As of Wednesday afternoon, no charges were filed against the man in Youngstown Municipal Court, and the man was not in the Mahoning County jail.
