Victim testifies during kidnapping, assault trial

YOUNGSTOWN — The second day of testimony in the trial of three brothers accused of kidnapping, robbing and assaulting a 24-year-old man Oct. 21, 2021, featured the testimony of the victim, his brother and a co-defendant was offered a plea deal.

Anthony, 23, and twins Kyle and Keith Ellison, 21, are on trial in the courtroom of Judge John Durkin of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court. The trial resumes at 9 a.m. today.

The victim, Billy Hall Jr., told jurors Wednesday the brothers all were involved in the incident, but Anthony Ellison was not in the car when it pulled up to his home on Loveland Road on the South Side that morning.

Hall said he was shoved into the car. He agreed during questioning the Ellisons accused him of stealing either marijuana or money as they drove him in a car and later assaulted him at another Youngstown home.

Hall’s voice trailed off at times, and he did not appear capable of answering all of the questions he was asked. He agreed with one of the defense attorneys that he had an individual education program in school. An IEP addresses special needs of students.

Assistant Prosecutor Nick Brevetta asked Hall why he did not initially mention the presence of a gun at a home on Neilson Avenue during the assaults when police first questioned him. He said it was because he was “scared,” and “it happened so fast.”

He testified he was friends with all three Ellisons. When Brevetta asked how it made him feel to have these three assaulting him, he said “upset and confused.” He said he does not know why they beat him up.

Hall’s brother, Jonah Hall, 23, testified he had been friends with all three Ellisons for about seven years and was “real close” with them. His brother did not hang out with them as much, he said.

On Oct. 5, 2021, he awoke up to some noise at the house on Loveland Road and saw a car in the street and then saw Anthony Ellison pulling his brother out of the car and punching his brother in the face. Jonah said he did not immediately rush to help his brother “because I just woke up” and “I was still trying to wonder what was going on.”

He testified Kyle Ellison was yelling something about his brother “stole some money and stole some weed.” Jonah Hall testified that Anthony said Jonah’s brother “stole some weed.”

After the Ellisons left, Keith Ellison texted Jonah Hall, he said.

In one text, Jonah Hall asked Keith Ellison “How much he owe you?”

Keith Ellison then replied “… he got sticky fingers.”

Co-defendant Undrell Fletcher, 24, also testified. He is charged with the same offenses against Billy Hall as the Ellisons, but he agreed to testify in the case. Prosecutors made a deal with him to recommend that he get probation instead of prison time if he testifies.

Under questioning from Brevettta, Fletcher said he spoke to Youngstown police detective Michael Cox after the U.S. Marshal’s Service arrested him.

He testified he knew Billy Hall since elementary school, and Fletcher also had an IEP while in school. He said Billy Hall’s mother treated him like he also was her son. Fletcher stayed at the Halls’ home at times and went places with them. He was not friends with the Ellisons separate from them being friends of Billy and Jonah Hall, he said.

Fletcher testified that on Oct. 5, 2021, he was walking to a store when Keith Ellison picked him up. Keith was driving. Kyle Ellison was in the front passenger seat. Fletcher was in the back seat. The Ellisons were going to the Hall’s house, saying the reason was to “get money back,” Fletcher testified.

When they got to the Halls’ house, Keith Ellison knocked on the door and Billy Hall came out. Kyle and Keith Ellison “made Billy get in the car,” Fletcher said. “Keith said ‘I want my money,'” Fletcher said. Keith Ellison “went through Billy’s pockets” on the drive to the home on Neilson Avenue, he said.

Defense attorney Ron Yarwood later questioned how Keith Ellison went through the pockets of someone in the back seat of a car he was driving.

When they got to Neilson Avenue, Keith and Kyle Ellison took Billy Hall out of the car, and Anthony Ellison came out of the house, he said. All three assaulted Billy Hall, he said. He saw Kyle Ellison put a gun to Billy Hall’s head, Fletcher said.

The Ellisons dropped off Billy Hall at his house later. Fletcher said he did not participate in the assaults or robbery or kidnapping.
