Resident of alternative sentencing facility charged with assault

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN — Justin Gerber, 28, was arraigned Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court on misdemeanor assault charge following an incident at 11:52 p.m. Saturday at Community Corrections Association, 1608 Market St.

Youngstown police responded to the alternative sentencing facility for an assault. Police were advised that Gerber went into another resident’s room and assaulted the other resident with a shelf ripped off of the wall. The victim, 43, suffered severe lacerations to his forearms and elbows from taking defensive actions, a police report states.

When police approached Gerber, he was in a day room and would not respond to an officer’s attempts to talk to him, the report states. He circled an officer in a manner similar to a boxer, the report states. Two officers put Gerber in handcuffs and placed him in a police cruiser.

The victim told police he was laying in his room when Gerber entered and struck him with the shelf. He said he had no idea why Gerber struck him. The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
