Man, 35, pleads in federal gun case

WARREN — A North Feederle Drive SE man has agreed to a plea deal with federal prosecutors and this week pleaded guilty to a charge of possessing a firearm while being convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence offense.

The charges stem from a June 15, arrest of Whittington R. Davis by members of the Warren police Street Crimes Unit investigating a gun incident.

Davis, 35, appeared before U.S. Judge Bridget Meehan Brennan of Northern Ohio District Court in Cleveland, who set sentencing for 10 a.m. April 4, 2023.

Davis remains in federal custody.

According to the indictment, Warren officers were dispatched after a caller reported a man was walking in a southeast side neighborhood with a pink firearm. He was yelling and screaming, and possibly jumped on a woman, a police report states.

Police found a man matching the description in the 2200 block of North Feederle. The man refused to approach officers and began to run. Officers giving chase saw a pink firearm fall from the man’s waistband a short distance later, police said. One officer picked up the weapon, identified as a loaded Kel-Tec .380 caliber, and continued chasing the man through a housing complex, the report states. The man was caught eventually and taken into custody.

A check of records showed Davis was prevented from possessing a weapon because he was convicted in Warren Municipal Court of domestic violence in October 2009. The federal indictment states Davis was previously convicted in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court of possession of cocaine in August 2007, and a federal charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm in August 2014.

The plea deal also states Davis is forfeiting interest in the gun.
