Warrant issued for man charged in fatal crash

CANFIELD — An arrest warrant has been issued for Nikolas Gable, 24, of Thistleridge Drive in Macedonia on misdemeanor vehicular homicide in the Aug. 15 crash on the Ohio Turnpike that killed a 29-year-old Washingtonville man.

The crash was near North Lima in Beaver Township as Nicholas Cyphert, 29, was repairing a tire on a tractor-trailer rig.

A warrant for Gable’s arrest was issued Sept. 12 in Mahoning County Area Court in Canfield, where Gable is scheduled for a 4 p.m. Sept. 27 hearing on another charge in the case, failure to maintain assured clear distance, a minor misdemeanor.

Gable’s vehicular homicide charge is a second-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to 90 days in jail and a possible driver’s license suspension and fine.

Cyphert died in the 3:50 a.m. accident in the eastbound lanes. Cyphert was walking toward the rear of the tractor-trailer rig to retrieve his warning triangles when he was hit by passing utility van driven by Gable, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Cyphert worked for a tire repair service and had just completed a tire repair on a semi on the shoulder of the highway and was in right lane alongside of the trailer when Gable, the driver of a Ford Transit van, sideswiped the vehicle, then Cyphert, according to the patrol report. Cyphert was pronounced dead at the scene.

The turnpike has two lanes of eastbound traffic in that area.

Cyphert was a 2012 graduate of Salem High School and was “passionate about his work as a diesel technician at Travel Centers of America,” according to his obituary. He was engaged to be married and had three children.

Starting at $3.23/week.
