Valley firefighters join coat drive

Collecting items at football games

With inclement weather approaching, local firefighter unions are helping to fill the need of some area children for warm coats to protect them from the elements.

Members of Warren Professional Firefighters Local 204 along with Bazetta Professional Firefighters Local 3703, Cortland Professional Firefighters Local 3632, Girard Firefighters Local 1220, and Howland Professional Firefighters Local 2786, will conduct a joint “Fill the Boot” campaign at area football games Oct. 7 and 14.

The proceeds will be donated to the “Live Like Lindsey” campaign, which helps local youth stay warm during the winter. The Live Like Lindsay campaign continues the legacy of Lindsey Villanueva, the late wife of a Trumbull County Sheriff deputy, who died last November of a brain aneurism.

In 2018, Lindsey Villaneuva began an annual coat drive for children. After her death, her husband Tony and her children took over the drive and formed Live Like Lindsey LLC.

The local firefighters will collect coats during the Oct. 7 Warren G. Harding vs. Cardinal Mooney football game at Mollenkopf Stadium in Warren; Howland Tigers vs. Chaney Cowboys at Lombardi Field in Howland; Girard Indians vs. Hubbard Eagles at Arrowhead Stadium in Girard; and the Lakeview Bulldogs vs. Poland Bulldogs at Don Richards Memorial Stadium in Cortland.

On Oct 14, the same firefighters will be at Warren JFK vs. Cleveland Central Catholic at Leopard Stadium in Liberty.

The firefighters hope this mass presentation will spark a big donation to present to the Live Like Lindsey organization the following week, tentatively set for Oct. 17.
