Testimony to start in gun case

YOUNGSTOWN — Testimony is expected to begin today in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court against a Youngstown man facing two gun charges.

The charges are in connection to an August 2020 fight involving three men in the 3600 block of Southern Boulevard.

Clarence Williams, 37, 633 Parkcliffe Ave., is charged with carrying a concealed weapon and having a weapon as a felon. Jury selection was completed Tuesday in the courtroom of Judge Anthony D’Apolito, with prosecuting attorney Jennifer Paris and defense attorney Lynn Maro questioning potential jurors.

Paris told jurors that state testimony will include accounts from several Youngstown police officers, while Maro said she expects the trial to be completed by Thursday.

If convicted of both charges, Williams faces a maximum prison sentence of 4.5 years months. D’Apolito in February denied a motion to suppress evidence from jurors. Williams posted a $20,000 bond in the case, records show.
