Man shot to death on city’s North Side

YOUNGSTOWN — The city recorded its 19th homicide of the year with a Thursday evening shooting on the North Side.

Police said they responded around 6:30 p.m. to New York Avenue off Logan Avenue for reports of multiple gunshots. When officers arrived, the victim already had been driven to the hospital. Police confirmed the man died a short time after arriving at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Police were not releasing the victim’s name Thursday evening, but detectives were on the scene gathering evidence for several hours after the shooting.

The city’s last homicide occurred around 1:30 a.m. Sept. 18 outside O’Donold’s Irish Pub on West Federal Street in downtown. Johnny Serrano, 23, of Campbell, has been charged in the shooting death of Yarnell C. Green, 32, of Youngstown.

Before that, Cameron Dyer, 36, was shot Aug. 26 at the Logan Avenue Gas Mart, 1704 Logan Ave., and then driven to the Youngstown Police Department, 16 W. Boardman St., by Jacques K. Peterman-Oliver, 45, of Brookline Avenue, who was later charged with murder in Dyer’s death.

In 2021, the city had 30 homicides.

The Youngstown Police Department detective division and Mahoning County Coroner’s Office are investigating Thursday’s homicide.
