Man shot to death at home in Boardman

BOARDMAN — Police are investigating a Saturday morning shooting in which an elderly man was killed, according to Boardman police Chief Todd Werth.

Boardman police received a call that a shooting had occurred around 7:30 a.m. and responded to 1894 Lealand Ave., which is off Mathews Road, where they promptly arrested a suspect, Werth said. The house is owned by Michael and Patricia Bruno, according to the Mahoning County Auditor’s website.

Werth said officers had a warrant to search the residence where the shooting occurred.

The cornoer’s office has not yet ruled cause of death, and the identity of the victim is not being released until his family is notified.

Werth said the incident remains under investigation.

The township recorded no homicides in 2021, but had three in 2020. On Feb. 13, 2020, Kane Wiesensee, 18, was found shot to death at a house on West Boulevard. His best friend and roommate, Emanuel Boyd, 19, of Boardman, was arrested in connection to that shooting and was indicted several months later on charges of involuntary manslaughter, burglary, being a felon in possession of a firearm, tampering with evidence, grand theft, receiving stolen property and falsification.

He pleaded guilty in July 2020 to involuntary manslaughter and burglary and was sentenced to 14 to 18 years in prison. Police said Boyd stole the gun that was used in the accidental shooting.

In October of 2020, A 19-year-old man was found on the side of the road on South Avenue near Western Reserve Road. Police received multiple 911 calls about a man being thrown from vehicle on South Avenue around noon. The body was found on the side of the road outside of Xtreme Clean Auto Spa., 8525 South Avenue.

Werth said the body had multiple gunshot wounds. The victim, who was identified as Issak Villarreal, 19 of Youngstown, was taken to St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Charles K. Sidberry, 20, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter, kidnapping, assault and a gun specification in October of last year instead of going to trial in the Oct. 3, 2020, shooting death of Villarreal.

Judge Maureen Sweeney of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced Sidberry to 18 to 23 1/2 years in prison. Sidberry was indicted on murder but that was reduced in exchange for Sidberry’s guilty plea.

According to prosecutors, Villarreal was killed when Sidberry and two other men went to the Wendy’s restaurant parking lot in Boardman, where Sidberry intended to sell a gun to Villarreal. The two other men did not know a gun sale was going to take place.

The four men met in the parking lot of the Wendy’s where Villarreal worked. Villarreal got in the vehicle, and a dispute took place over the price of the gun and the amount of ammunition that was supposed to be provided. There was a scuffle over the gun, and it went off.

Prior to 2020, the last homicide in Boardman was in 2014, Werth said previously.
