Mahoning County gets $5.7M lead paint grant

Mahoning County received $5.7 million from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to combat lead-based paint hazards in homes of lower-income residents.

It’s the third-such large federal award to the city for this purpose since 2016.

HUD awarded $5 million from its Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control program and $700,000 from its Healthy Homes program, U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Cleveland, announced Wednesday.

The money will help identify and remove lead-based paint and other health hazards in homes to protect children and family from the health effects of lead exposure, Brown said.

“Families shouldn’t have to worry that their home is hurting or poisoning their children, but sadly, that’s still a reality for too many in Ohio,” he said. “This investment will allow Mahoning County to protect children from the hazards of lead-based paint and invest in the health and future of our communities.”

Mahoning County received $4.6 million from HUD in 2019 and $2.9 million in 2016 to address lead-based paint issues in homes.
