Campbell man killed in crash in Austintown

AUSTINTOWN — One man died after being thrown from his vehicle during a crash around 1 p.m. Thursday on Interstate 80 near Interstate 680, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

Mitchel McCarthy, 29, of Campbell, who was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, died as a result of his injuries.

McCarthy was driving a 2019 Ram 1500 east on Interstate 80 when he passed a Kenworth truck driven at a high speed, witnesses told the patrol. When McCarthy attempted to change lanes, he hit the front of the Kenworth and lost control.

McCarthy’s Ram overturned several times before coming to rest on I- 680. Traffic was backed up on Interstate 80 following the accident, according to reports.

The driver of the Kenworth, a 66-year-old Akron man, was not injured.
