3 Valley schools win prestigious national Blue Ribbon honors

Staff report

Canfield Village Middle School, South Range Elementary School and Seaborn Elementary School in Mineral Ridge have taken the blue ribbon this year.

The U.S. Department of Education has designated 13 schools across Ohio, including the three in the Mahoning Valley, as 2022 National Blue Ribbon Schools.

“As a school our teachers, staff and students are excited and feel proud as a community to receive the honor,” said Principal Steven Matos of South Range Elementary. “When you look at everything that goes into that data, it’s a combined effort, it goes to show how hard everyone has worked here.”

Nationwide, the education department recognized 297 public and private schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools.

The recognition is given to schools based on academic performance along with their progress in closing achievement gaps among groups of students based on areas such as race, ethnicity, disability or income levels.

This marks the 40th year the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has been awarded to schools across Ohio.

“I am proud of the work done by Ohio’s Blue Ribbon Schools to help secure a bright future for our students,” said U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, in announcing the awards. “These schools, and many others across our state, are setting a high bar and setting Ohio’s next generation up for success.”
