Woman accused in Trumbull courthouse vandalism is no-show

WARREN — The Youngstown woman accused of causing more than $11,000 in damage to the historic Trumbull County Courthouse in November did not appear for a hearing Monday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court.

Visiting Judge David Fuhry, who retired from the Geauga County Common Pleas Court in 2016, ordered a warrant for the arrest of Joanna McCane, 43, of 555 W. Ravenwood Ave., Youngstown, after she did not appear for pretrial on charges of fourth-degree vandalism, an offense that carries a potential 18-month prison sentence.

McCane, who was freed after posting $10,000 bond, was indicted in May on the felony charges by a Trumbull County grand jury. Fuhry was sitting on the bench of the common pleas court while Gov. Mike DeWine decides on a replacement for Judge Peter J. Kontos, whose retirement was effective Sunday.

Meanwhile, local authorities for the second time since the Nov. 27, 2021, incident, will be looking to bring in McCane.

She is accused of being the woman captured in a security video shortly after 2 a.m. Nov. 27, 2021, placing her purse and backpack on the sidewalk and grass of the courthouse lawn. Another video taken from the west side of the courthouse shows a vandal picking up a rock and throwing it forcefully at a first-floor window. When it bounces off, the person picks it up again and again — a total of 13 times — each time throwing the rock at several windows. A maintenance official gave a damage estimate of about $11,000, which was covered by insurance.

McCane was arrested March 30 to face the charges in Warren Municipal Court, including the charges connected to McCane’s earlier arrest that Thanksgiving weekend for an incident at the former Jacked Steakhouse on North Park Avenue, where she had refused to leave after finishing her meal and drink. Since that time, McCane had pleaded no contest in municipal court to a trespass misdemeanor.
