Woman, 44, accused of vandalism turns self in

WARREN — A Youngstown woman accused of causing thousands of dollars of damage to the historic Trumbull County Courthouse turned herself in to authorities Monday at the Trumbull County Common Pleas Court after missing her court date last week.

Joanna McCane, 44, of W. Ravenwood Avenue, appeared handcuffed and shackled in front of visiting Judge Gary L. Yost. A warrant had been issued for her arrest last week after she failed to appear in court.

McCane’s attorney, Alexander Keane, told Yost that McCane had not appeared because she did not receive notice of the court date by mail as she had expected. He said her absence was not an attempt to run.

Yost told McCane it is “very important” that she stay in touch with her lawyer, and that her lawyer have a way to contact her.

McCane claimed part of the confusion was that various dates for her court appearance had been discussed, though none of those dates were last week.

“I understand now to check the dates myself,” McCane said.

McCane was free on a $10,000 bond, which was reinstated after her court appearance Monday morning, according to Keane.

McCane is accused of causing some $11,000 worth of damage to the courthouse on Nov. 27, 2021, the day she was released from an overnight stay at the county jail across the street, Trumbull County jail records show.

Surveillance video of the incident shows a vandal picking up a rock and throwing it forcefully at a first-floor courthouse window. When the rock bounces off, the vandal picks it up a dozen more times, throwing it at several windows.

McCane was arrested March 30 and spent more than a month in jail before she was released. She is facing one charge of fourth-degree felony vandalism, an offense that carries a potential 18-month prison sentence.

McCane is due back in court 8:30 a.m. Monday.
