City police investigate 14th killing

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown Police Department is investigating the city’s latest homicide after a man was found fatally shot Sunday afternoon on the city’s South Side.

A police report states officers were called out at 12:15 p.m. Sunday to 1417 E. Florida Ave. for a 46-year-old man lying in the back of a house with an apparent gunshot wound.

When police arrived, officers observed a man matching a description of the suspected shooter standing next to a vehicle outside with his hands up and with the weapon unloaded on the top of the vehicle’s roof.

John Morgan, 45, was taken into custody by police without incident, according to a police report. He is facing a murder charge.

The victim was transported by ambulance to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. The victim and suspect knew each other, according to police.

The property where the man’s body was found was taped off by police tape. A vehicle at the scene was also towed away, the police report states.

The department’s detective division and crime lab were at the scene. The Mahoning County coroner’s office also is investigating.

The name of the victim has not been released.

There have been 14 homicides in the city this year. The 13th was July 23, and before that, it was July 5. There were 27 homicides last year in Youngstown.
