Austintown man indicted on murder charge

WARREN — A 21-year-old Austintown man was indicted Wednesday by a Trumbull County grand jury on a murder charge linked to the July death of a man in Girard.

Cole P. Conti of Cannon Road is accused of causing the death of William Lowry in a stabbing early in the morning July 30 in the 500 block of Trumbull Avenue in Girard.

Conti, who is charged with a single count of purposeful murder, is scheduled to be arraigned before Judge Ronald J. Rice this morning in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Jail records show Conti has been incarcerated since the morning of Lowry’s slaying, and his bond was set in Girard Municipal Court at 10 percent of $750,000.

Conti was arrested early that morning after he told Girard police he stabbed Lowry, after Lowry punched in the face one of the men he was with, according to police reports.

The three men started to fight, and Conti admitted to taking a knife and stabbing Lowry multiple times, according to a police report.

Trumbull County Coroner Dr. Lawrence D’Amico said he would release more information about Lowry’s death today. Prosecutors said Lowry died of stab wounds.

A police report stated Lowry was stabbed five times.

Police dispatch received notice from St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital at 1:10 a.m. July 30 that Lowry had died.

A police call summary report showed that a knife was recovered at the scene.

The case was investigated by the Trumbull County Homicide Task Force.
