YOUNGSTOWN -- A freshly impaneled Mahoning County grand jury looked at its first set of criminal cases on Thursday and returned five indictments, including a sealed document involving five charges dealing with a sexual assault.
The panel of nine jurors plus five alternates, who were sworn in Thursday morning by Judge R. Scott Krichbaum, then went to the deliberation room to consider 16 cases, examining five witness testimonies.
The jurors returned a sealed indictment with charges of two counts of first-degree rape, two counts of third-degree gross sexual imposition and another first-degree attempted rape charge. The case will be unsealed once an arrest is made.
The grand jury continued 11 cases, including one case left over from the March 2021 term and five more from the March 2022 term. The current grand jurors will report every Thursday until the first of October.
Others indicted on felony charges:
• Jacob M. Dominick, 18, in care of Mahoning County jail, two counts first-degree rape in a case investigated by Poland Township police;
• Jawalen J. Shaw, 25, of Cambridge Avenue, Youngstown, possession of a fentanyl-related compound;
• Jermaine L. Akins, 42, of Division Avenue, Cleveland, sex offender who failed to provide notice of change of address;
• Matthew G. Zelina, 40, Struthers Road, Lowellville, two counts theft from a person in a protected class, two counts theft and one count grand theft.
