Mom shot in chest during altercation
YOUNGSTOWN — No charges were filed as of Thursday after a woman suffered a gunshot wound to the upper chest. A police report states she pulled a gun on her son — but was shot during the struggle that ensued.
Lisa Walker 53, of South Heights Avenue, was in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, according to police.
Police were called to the home of the son, Rydell B. Duke, 34, in the 300 block of Mistletoe Avenue on the South Side, where the confrontation took place.
When police got there, Walker was gone, but Duke told them his mother came to the house and pointed a firearm at his forehead.
Duke said his daughter was staying at his mother’s house. Duke told police he picked up his daughter and took her to his house, leading to his mother’s visit.
She yelled at him that he “had no right taking her from my house without permission,” the police report states.
Duke said he told her multiple times to get off his property and eventually swore at her. He said Walker went to her car and got a gun and pushed it against his forehead, according to the report.
He said he reached for the gun “out of reaction” and they struggled over it. It went off twice, police were told.
Walker then got back into her car and drove off, he said.
Officers found blood drops on the front porch and continuing into the driveway, according to the police report. Police department crime scene investigators collected evidence at Duke’s home and Walker’s home, police said.
Another officer investigated at Walker’s home. Walker was taken to the hospital by ambulance for a gunshot wound to the right upper chest.
Detectives spoke with witnesses, who confirmed Duke’s story about his mother coming to his home and causing problems, leading to an argument that lasted 10 minutes, and Walker pulling out a gun and pointing it at Duke.
Duke was on his phone talking to his wife during part of the argument, police said. Police recovered the gun at Walker’s home.
