YOUNGSTOWN -- A 32-year-old father who is charged in the February overdose of his 18-month-old daughter pleaded guilty to a third-degree felony of child endangering.
Corey Douglas was before Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Anthony D'Apolito on Wednesday for the plea hearing. Douglas, who could get as much as three years in prison, will be sentenced Aug. 31.
Meanwhile, prosecutors have recommended Douglas' co-defendant, Elizabeth Warner, get nine months for the same offense against the 18-month-old child who had to be treated with an opiate reversal drug after she fell ill from fentanyl.
Warner had pleaded guilty in June, also to a third-degree felony child-endangering charge. D'Apolito has scheduled her sentencing for Sept. 1.
Warner, 27, and Douglas both were charged after the couple took their daughter to the Smith Township Police Department on Feb. 24, telling police the child may have taken a Percocet pill.
The couple and their child were staying in a recreational vehicle behind a home on Johnson Road in Smith Township when the child was found in need of medical attention. Police said the child's lips were blue, and she had a faint pulse and shallow breathing.
An officer administered rescue breaths and gave the child a dose of the opiate reversal drug naloxone. The girl was then taken by ambulance to a hospital in Alliance. She later was transferred to Akron Children's Hospital, police said.
Both defendants have been released from jail after posting bond.
