YOUNGSTOWN -- V'Aira Vaughn-Lewis, 27, of Compass West Drive in Austintown, was sentenced to one year of probation Friday after pleading guilty in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court to aggravated assault.

Vaughn-Lewis was charged in an Oct. 31, 2021, incident that occurred along Interstate 680 near Belle Vista Avenue at 4:30 a.m. when she shot multiple times into a car containing her boyfriend, 38, who was hit by at least one of the bullets.

A Youngstown police report stated officers were called to the interstate and found Vaughn-Lewis in the passenger seat of a vehicle rendering first aid to the driver. She was taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and later was taken to jail. The man was in critical condition later at the hospital.

Prosecutors said Vaughn-Lewis was in fear for her life, so she shot the man.
