Man, 68, held on murder charge

YOUNGSTOWN — A 68-year-old man was arrested on a murder charge in connection to a fatal shooting at a gasoline station on the South Side on Wednesday.

Samuel L. Byrd Jr. is housed in the Mahoning County jail awaiting an appearance in Youngstown Municipal Court. He was arrested about 8 p.m. Friday at the Boardman Inn, according to Youngstown police.

Authorities had few other details about his apprehension.

At 3:04 a.m. Wednesday, Youngstown police officers were sent to the Shell gas station, 1907 South Ave., to investigate a shooting. Upon arrival, officers found a white Lincoln SUV with numerous bullet holes and Keimone L. Black, 29, on the ground next to the vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds.

Medics arrived and transported Black to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Youngstown detectives and crime lab staff arrived to begin processing and investigating the shooting.

Police said it appeared Black was targeted for the fatal shooting. A second person in the vehicle was not injured, reports state.

According to court records, Black was indicted May 12 by a Mahoning County grand jury on a weapons charge and released on bond following arraignment in common pleas court. The charge stemmed from an April 9 incident in Youngstown, records state.

Black’s death is the 10th homicide of the year in Youngstown.
