Man, 27, found shot on E. Side

Police seek tips on 9th homicide of year

YOUNGSTOWN — Youngstown police are investigating the shooting death of a man, 27, at the intersection of Byron and Kirkwood Streets on the East Side.

Youngstown police were called there Thursday night for a man with a gun and then for gunfire.

When police arrived for the 6:38 p.m. call, they were flagged down by residents of a home in the 300 block of Byron Street, who said there was an unknown man in their detached garage who had been shot.

Officers began lifesaving measures on the man prior to the arrival of an American Medical Rescue ambulance. Ambulance personnel took the man to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he died later in the evening. Pieces of evidence were gathered that will be submitted to the state crime lab, according to the Youngstown Police Department.

Officers were made aware of a second gunshot victim who arrived at the hospital in a personal vehicle, but for now, detectives are investigating that as a separate incident, a news release states.

The YPD detective division and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office are investing the death as a a homicide.

This is the city’s ninth homicide of 2022. There were 28 homicides last year.

The eighth homicide was May 31, about 8 p.m. when Isiah Walker, 16, was shot and made it to his home in the 700 block of Wilbur Avenue, where he died. His home is near near Homestead Park on the South Side, where authorities believe Walker was shot.

Police were sent to the 700 block of Wilbur at about 8 p.m. for reports of gunfire.
