YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Coroner's Office has identified the man who was shot to death on Byron Street as Nigel Reynolds, 27.

He was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after being found Thursday night at Byron and Kirkwood streets on the East Side. The Youngstown Police Department detective division, along with the coroner's office, are investing the death as a homicide.

This is the city's ninth homicide of 2022.

Youngstown police were called to the intersection for a man with a gun, and then also for gunfire.

When police arrived for the 6:38 p.m. call, they were flagged down by residents of a home in the 300 block of Byron Street, who said there was an unknown man in their detached garage who had been shot.

Officers began lifesaving measures prior to the arrival of an American Medical Rescue ambulance. Ambulance personnel took the man to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, where he died later in the evening.

Multiple pieces of evidence were gathered that will be submitted to the state crime lab, according to a news release from the Youngstown Police Department.

Officers were made aware of a second gunshot victim who arrived at the hospital in a personal vehicle, but detectives were investigating that as a separate incident.
