AUSTINTOWN -- Township police officers are investigating a case of child abuse or neglect after getting a call on May 10 from a Pittsburgh hospital about a 2-year-old girl.
The child, who was living in Westchester Apartments, was being treated for "multiple stages of healed fractures."
An officer spoke to a Mahoning County Children Services investigator who said the mother took the toddler to the hospital on May 9 for medical attention. According to the police report, a doctor at UPMC-Pittsburgh determined that fractures to the right tibia, left tibia, left radius and left femur were at various stages of healing. Healing bruises were found on the girl's right eyelid, left forehead, side of the left eye, right elbow, on the right side of the back, the right thigh and right lower leg.
The report states the injuries to the child were sustained around April 30.
Officers were also told by children services officials they believe a 4-year-old also was living at the Westchester Drive apartment.
Officers and a Children Services official went to the home to check on the condition of the 4-year-old, but no one responded when they knocked at the door, the report states. A key was received from property management, because of the circumstances, the report states, and the four law enforcement officials entered the apartment.
It was determined no one was home, the report states, but a small bed was found on the floor of one of the rooms.
Children Services determined when the 2-year-old girl was to be released from the hospital, she was going to be taken by the agency to further investigate how the injuries were sustained, the report states.
