YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown man is on trial this week in Mahoning County Common Pleas court, accused of taking part in an Oct. 12, 2021, shooting on the East Side.
Jury selection continued into Monday afternoon in the courtroom of Judge Anthony Donofrio. By 4 p.m., a jury was selected, opening statements were given, and the state put on its first slate of witnesses, including some police officers.
State testimony is expected to continue this morning.
Luis M. Johnson, 24, is facing charges of attempted murder and felonious assault. Both felonies have two gun specifications each, including drive-by shooting specifications, that carry mandatory additional prison time if Johnson is found guilty. Johnson had listed a Catalina Drive address, according to court records.
Defense attorney James A. Shoren and assistant prosecutors told prospective jurors they believe the trial will last three to four days.
Johnson, who is free after posting $75,000 bond, is accused of shooting from a vehicle, wounding a man as he was driving away from a Fairfax Avenue home.
According to reports, the victim was the ex-boyfriend of a woman who was involved with Johnson. The victim survived after being treated at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.
A co-defendant, Tyree E. A. Robinson, 23, of Indiana Avenue, Girard, had his trial in Donofrio's court continued, with the court docket not showing a new trial date.
Police said Robinson helped Johnson carry out the offenses. Both men were arrested a few days after the shooting.
