South Side gunfire kills 1, hurts 2, including 3-year-old girl

YOUNGSTOWN — One person is dead and two more — a mother and her toddler — were hurt in a shooting Tuesday on the South Side that police said appears to be targeted.

Police and the department’s Neighborhood Response Unit were called just before 5:30 p.m. to the 3800 block of Mohawk Avenue, where they found a chaotic scene involving a gray Chevrolet Camaro with three victims inside.

Police, according to a release, began life-saving measures on a 23-year-old woman who was shot in the leg. Her daughter, a 3-year-old, was grazed in the leg by a bullet.

Killed was the driver, Rawsheem Aponte, 24, likely from gunfire, according to police.

The investigation as of Tuesday afternoon revealed the shooting was “likely a targeted incident in which the suspects chased down the victims in their vehicle” and shot at them in the area of Mount Vernon and Mohawk avenues, the release states. Pollice estimated at least 50 shots were fired.

Police are looking for two men involved in the shooting, according to the release.

Detectives and the department’s Crime Scene Unit spoke with several witnesses and collected numerous shell casings, according to police. Police and the Mahoning County Coroner’s Office are investigating.
