Ex-doctor placed on house arrest

CANFIELD — Former neurosurgeon Dr. Ali Kooshkabadi was released from jail and ordered to electronically-monitored house arrest following his arraignment in Mahoning County Area Court.

Kooshkabadi, 39, of Canfield, appeared virtually Friday from the Mahoning County jail before Judge Joseph Houser in Canfield Area Court. He was arrested Wednesday and is charged with having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony. If convicted, Kooshkabadi could face up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

Assistant Prosecutor Michael Yacavone said the state and the defense agreed that although Kooshkabadi was facing new charges, there were no new facts in the case. The state and Kooshkabadi’s attorney, David Engler, who was not present at the arraignment, agreed that the original $50,000 would be sufficient, but based on the nature of the allegations the state has requested electronically-monitored house arrest. No reports on the circumstances surrounding his arrest have been released.

Houser ordered Kooshkabadi’s release on a $10,000 personal recognizance bond, which means the defendant does not have to pay in order to be released. Houser also ordered him to electronically-monitored house arrest prior to his preliminary hearing.

Kooshkabadi asked for more time beyond the required 10 days between arraignment and a preliminary hearing. The preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. May 6.

Kooshkabadi faces several other charges, including a terroristic threat charge. That charge was filed in Boardman Area Court and was filed by the Boardman Police Department, and a preliminary hearing is scheduled for 9 a.m. May 3.

He also is charged with two misdemeanor counts of aggravated menacing and one count of violating a protection order in Canfield Area Court. A pretrial hearing for those charges is also set for 9:30 a.m. May 6. Those charges were filed against him by the Mahoning County Sheriff’s Office. They are alleged to have occurred April 1. The terroristic threat charge is alleged to have occurred April 2, according to court records.

Kooshkabadi was given a $50,000 bond in both cases and posted both bonds April 15, according to court records. He was booked into jail again Wednesday on the new weapons charge.
