Canfield offers one more chance for house repairs
CANFIELD — Township trustees have given a homeowner one last chance to make good on pledges of home repairs.
The board had a zoning hearing for a property at 4816 Messerly Road, owned by Cody Elyko, who attended the Tuesday meeting virtually.
Trustee Marie Cartwright told Elyko, “If we grant you another extension, that will be the last one. Don’t come back here for another.”
Trustee Brian Governor added, “June 1. That’s D-Day. The roof is the main thing. If it is not done, we can move to abate the property.”
Elyko said he understands and will work to meet the requirements.
Township Administrator Keith Rogers said the issue dates back to an Aug. 19, 2021, hearing regarding a failing roof and flooded basement in the home that had been vacant for some time. On Sept. 2, 2021, Elyko was sent the paperwork informing him of a Nov. 5 deadline to get the roof on the structure.
On Nov. 5, he presented zoning with a signed contract for the roof, but requested an extension due to a material delay. He was granted an extension to this month and also had to have the flooded basement pumped out.
Elyko said he arranged for a pump, but had to first clear 300 feet of drain to accept the water. He then said the flow had to be slowed enough to not overflow the drain system.
“The main issue was the speed we could drain the water,” he told trustees. “We had to drain it slowly.”
He said once the basement is drained, it should be OK if he can get electric service to the house so a sump pump can be put into service to keep the basement dry.
On the roof issue, he said the problem is still in getting the materials. He took out a second contract with a different roofer who will be putting down the sheeting that will make the roof waterproof for a short time while awaiting the shingles.
“I have been assured by the roofing contractor that the shingles will be in soon,” he said. “I have been held back by material availability. I am frustrated that I have two contracts for our $21,000 roof.”
Governor asked Elyko if he obtained the roofing permit from the county, to which he replied the contractor included the permit in the contract.
