Man from Niles pleads guilty to sexual battery

WARREN — A Niles man on Monday pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual battery connected to two years of abuse of a girl that he knows.

The crimes happened from the fall of 2019 through the summer of 2020 when the girl was between the ages of 13 and 15.

Brian B. Baldwin, 36, of 2439 Ridgewood Avenue, will be sentenced by Trumbull County Common Pleas Judge Peter J. Kontos after he undergoes a background investigation conducted by the county probation department. Baldwin could face up to 30 years in prison and a mandatory five years of supervised release after he is freed.

Kontos will also label Baldwin a Tier 3 sexual offender. He must register his home address and workplace with the local sheriff’s office every 90 days for the rest of his life.

Assistant prosecutors said the offenses started in the fall of 2018 at an apartment at Carnegie Arms and involved sexual acts. The abuse continued into the summer 2020 at a Weathersfield address.

According to a police report, Weathersfield Township police were called to a home after the defendant had confessed the abuse to the mother of the victim on Dec. 24, 2021.

The plea deal — which saw prosecutors drop two additional counts of sexual battery — headed off a jury trial that would have started March 21 in Kontos’s court.

Baldwin, who was arrested on Dec. 25, 2021, remains in Trumbull County jail pending the posting of a $100,000 bond.
