Man convicted of murder indicted in prison assault case
YOUNGSTOWN — Marco J. Cardenas, 33, who is serving a life prison sentence at the Ohio State Penitentiary for killing the brother of Youngstown native and “Apprentice” star Omarosa Manigault in October 2011 has been indicted on new charges.
Cardenas’ indictments are among those released Thursday in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
Cardenas was indicted on possession of a deadly weapon with a notice of prior conviction; attempted murder with a criminal-gang-activity specification and repeat-violent-offender specification; felonious assault with a criminal-gang-activity specification, notice of prior conviction and repeat-violent-offender specification; and possessing criminal tools.
Some of the charges carry penalties of more than 10 years in prison if convicted.
Cardenas’ indictment alleges that on Dec. 29, 2021, he possessed a makeshift knife while in prison and tried to kill another man.
Cardenas was convicted in 2012 in Mahoning County of aggravated murder, felonious assault and aggravated burglary and was sentenced to life in prison with parole eligibility after 21 years.
In the 2012 case, police said Cardenas, then 22 and living on Plymouth Street, forced his way into his former girlfriend’s home on East Avondale Avenue while she was sleeping and shot and killed her boyfriend, Jack Manigault, Omarosa’s brother. Omarosa Manigault, 40, grew up in Youngstown and graduated from The Rayen School.
She was a contestant on the first season of Donald Trump’s reality television series “The Apprentice” in 2004 and later became assistant to the president and director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison during the Trump administration. She was fired close to a year later.
Also indicted is Brian M. Williams, 47, West Western Reserve Road, Poland, on aggravated vehicular assault, vehicular assault and three counts of operating a motor vehicle impaired.
The incident occurred Jan. 7 and involved serious injuries to a man while Williams was intoxicated. Williams had been previously been convicted of drunken driving in 2010 in Mahoning County Area Court in Austintown, according to his indictment.
Also indicted is Jamie R. Burk, 24, Frank Street, Struthers, on two counts of cruelty to companion animals for a Jan. 27 incident at her home involving a dead dog.
Joseph Angelo, 25, also of the Frank Street address, was indicted on two counts of cruelty to companion animals, but details of his involvement are not known.
According to court documents, an agent from Animal Charity of Ohio contacted the Struthers Police Department regarding a dead dog and possibly other animals at Burk’s home.
Struthers police knocked on the door after obtaining a search warrant. Inside the home, they found Burk, who fled up some stairs and later resisted arrest, assaulting an officer with her arms. She was convicted last month in Struthers Municipal Court of misdemeanor resisting arrest for that part of the case.
While officers were in the home, they found clothing, garbage and food on the floor of the home and two dog cages and a dog in one room.
A room where children were staying had worn-out mattresses and a dog barricaded in a closet, according to Struthers police. Seven dogs, one cat and one iguana were removed from the home and were taken to Animal Charity.
A woman who stayed there with six children was contacted and told no one would be permitted to stay at the house.
