WARREN -- The woman who is accused of doing more than $11,000 in damage to the historic Trumbull County Courthouse -- with about a dozen windows being broken or cracked -- is expected to appear in Warren Municipal Court today.
Joanna La Shawn McCane, 43, who was listed with a Cleveland Heights address, but now has a Ravenwood Avenue, Youngstown, listing, was booked into the Trumbull County jail at 1:44 p.m. Wednesday, according to jail records.
Trumbull County Sheriff Paul Monroe said McCane will be in court today but gave little detail surrounding the woman's arrest. The woman had been at large since shortly after the early morning Nov. 27, 2021, incident in which she was identified by surveillance video.
McCane was wanted on a warrant for not showing up for an initial Warren Municipal Court appearance Nov. 29 on two unrelated misdemeanor charges for which she was jailed Nov. 26, according to jail and court records.
Shortly after McCane's release from the Trumbull County jail around 2 a.m. Nov. 27, a woman wearing jeans, a gray coat over a pink hooded sweatshirt and gray winter boots can be seen on surveillance video from multiple angles placing her purse and backpack on the sidewalk and grass of the courthouse lawn. One video taken from the west side of the courthouse shows a vandal picking up a rock and throwing it forcefully at a first-floor window. When it bounces off, the person picks it up again -- 13 times -- and keeps throwing the rock at several windows.
The windows are double-pane glass and reports state only one of the more than a dozen damaged windows actually was broken all the way through. Other windows were damaged with cracks.
The initial arrest of the woman occurred about 4 p.m. Nov. 26 when she was asked several times but refused to leave the former Jacked Steakhouse, located across the street from Courthouse Square. According to a police report, restaurant employees said the woman ordered, paid for food and a drink, but sat there for several hours, once falling asleep. Jacked workers told an officer they had asked the woman to leave, the report states, but McCane denied being told that. In the report, she said she paid her bill and just wanted to sit there to allow her food and beer to settle.
When a police sergeant told her to leave and she became verbally combative in refusing the order, the report states McCane was charged with criminal trespass.
The woman had refused to give police her identification, but jail officers found her name on a piece of paper in her belongings, the report states.
