LIBERTY -- A police chase and subsequent manhunt Monday night that began on state Route 5 in eastern Portage County ended in a wooded area of Liberty off state Route 11 with one man being arrested by Tuesday morning.
Trumbull County 911 Center dispatchers alerted authorities about a high-speed work vehicle with a ladder traveling on Route 5 near the main gate of Camp James A. Garfield Joint Military Training Center shortly before 7:30 p.m.
Stop sticks were placed on the road, but the report states the vehicle still was going about 90 mph on the Warren Outerbelt. By the time the vehicle reached the Howland portion of the outerbelt, the report states the tires were falling apart.
The vehicle crashed into a guardrail in the southbound lane of state Route 11 near Tibbetts Wick Road. The driver got out of the vehicle and ran into the wooded area off the highway, the report states.
A search helicopter, police dogs and a drone were used to search the area for the man, who managed to elude authorities for a few hours before he resurfaced near the crash site shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday.
The man, identified as Robert V. Ashley, 57, of Tallmadge, was checked for hypothermia by medical technicians and then taken into custody about 7 a.m. Tuesday at the Trumbull County jail. Jail records show Ashley is scheduled to be arraigned today in Warren Municipal Court on a charge of failure to comply with signal or order of police officer.
