Bond set at $1M for man linked to Columbiana County homicide

LISBON — Bond was set at $1 million for Justin Givens in Columbiana County Municipal Court when he appeared in court for a felony charge of having weapons while under a disability.

Givens, 27, U.S. Route 30, Kensington, is being held in connection to the shooting death of MaryAnn McGuire on Depot Road on Friday. County Assistant Prosecutor Alec Beech asked for the $1 million bond at Givens’ arraigment on Monday.

“We do expect additional charges against him and we do consider him a danger to society,” Beech said.

Court documents state Givens was charged after a warrant on Friday while the Columbiana County Sheriff’s Office was investigating the homicide led to a search of Givens’ 2004 Dodge Ram pickup at a home on state Route 644 in Washington Township, where a Stevens Model 15 .22-caliber rifle was found. Givens already was facing charges of improperly handing of a firearm in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony, and, according to court reports, family members of Givens’ girlfriend have told authorities he has a drug problem involving the use of methamphetamines and has been known to express paranoia.

During Monday morning’s hearing by video arraignment from the county jail, Givens asked to say something and indicated to Judge Katelyn Dickey that the gun does not work and it was his grandfather’s gun. She cautioned him to speak to his attorney about those things.

When asked by Dickey if he has an attorney, Givens indicated defense attorney James Wise.

Wise is listed as his attorney on prior the charges he is facing in common pleas court of improperly handling of firearms in a motor vehicle, a fourth-degree felony; obstructing official business and endangering children, both misdemeanor offenses.

A preliminary hearing was set for Givens’ latest charge and he remains in custody at the Columbiana County jail.
