Man charged with impersonating officer

YOUNGSTOWN — Mill Creek MetroParks Police charged a Youngstown man with impersonating a peace officer and improperly handling firearms in a motor vehicle after a traffic stop on Canfield Road.

Kevin K. Neal, 53, 3349 Estates Circle, was arraigned Monday in Youngstown Municipal Court on the charges. A preliminary hearing is set for Monday. Neal remains in the Mahoning County jail on $25,000 bond, records show.

According to a police report, a parks police cruiser was waiting for a stop light on Canfield Road about 7:25 p.m. Saturday when a Pontiac G6 went through the signal, causing a vehicle that was turning to abruptly stop, the report states. After a short pursuit, the driver of the Pontiac pulled into a business on Canfield Road near Bears Den Road.

When the officer asked the driver why he did not stop initially, the man stated he didn’t have to because he “worked for the FBI,” according to the report. The man told the officer he didn’t have law enforcement credentials because he was an “undercover agent.”

At this point, the driver told the officer to call the FBI and ask them or to call “the senator… Rob Portman,” the report states.

When questioned if he had a firearm, the report states the driver denied having one, but police found a loaded handgun on the passenger seat inside a vinyl case, the report states.
