COVID-19 cases drop at Valley nursing homes

COVID-19 numbers dropped significantly this week at area nursing homes and prisons, but the numbers were mixed at nursing homes across Ohio.

Two Mahoning County nursing homes had more than 10 COVID-19 cases this week — the Windsor House at Omni Manor nursing home in Youngstown with nine patient and eight staff cases this week and the Oasis Center for Rehabilitation and Healing in Youngstown with 10 patient and two staff cases, according to Ohio Department of Health data.

Also four facilities had more than four cases — the Austinwoods Rehabilitation Healthcare Center nursing home in Austintown with four patient and four staff cases; Inn at Walker Mill assisted-living facility in Boardman with one patient case and six staff cases; Copeland Oaks Rest Home assisted-living facility in Sebring with two patient and four staff cases; and Canfield Acres Windsor House at Canfield nursing home in Canfield with three patient and three staff cases.

But that is much less than last week and the week before.

One Mahoning County facility had 39 cases two weeks ago, dropped to 18 last week and now has four, according to data from the state. Six other Mahoning County facilities also have four cases this week.

Trumbull County facilities also saw a reduction in case numbers.

Community Skilled Healthcare Center nursing home in Warren has seven patient and seven staff cases this week; and the Gillette Nursing Home in Warren has eight patient and two staff cases this week. But no other Trumbull County facility has more than two total cases this week.

Columbiana County continued to have only a handful of cases, according to the data.

The number of deaths associated with area nursing homes rose by four in Trumbull County this week to 180 and rose by one in Columbiana County to 88, but remained the same in Mahoning County at 303.

Across Ohio, the number of patient cases rose this week from 2,467 to 2,899, but the number of staff cases dropped from 3,699 to 3,476.

Among area prisons, the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown saw its huge number of staff cases from last week plummet from 59 to six and its inmate cases drop from three to one.

The number of cases at the Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown rose from six to eight this week, and inmate cases remained the same at five. The number of staff cases at the Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg dropped this week from 12 to four, and inmate cases dropped from seven to one.
