WARREN -- A Youngstown man on Wednesday was sentenced to six months in prison after being convicted of a theft charge involving stolen items at Walmart in Liberty Township.
The sentence for Jayshawn T. Sutton, 22, of Hillman Street, will be served concurrently to the year in prison he was given earlier this year after being convicted of having a weapon under disability and receiving stolen property in Mahoning County.
Sutton was transported from Belmont Correctional Institution to Trumbull County Common Pleas Court to appear Wednesday before Judge W. Wyatt McKay to complete his plea deal with prosecutors.
According to Trumbull County Assistant Prosecutor Ryan Sanders, the theft charge against Sutton stemmed from a Jan. 27, 2021, incident at the Walmart Super Center in Liberty. Reports show that a man had taken two televisions, an
iPhone XR and a Sony PlayStation, with a total value of $1,210.
The Mahoning County gun charge stems from a April 2021 incident after Youngstown police found Sutton walking on the West Side near where gunfire was heard.
Police were called to Griselda Avenue for a Shot Spotter activation, which is a system that alerts police to gunfire.
An officer questioned Sutton, and reports state the man appeared to be moving the right side of his body away from the officer, and when he raised his arms, the officer could hear a metallic sound. Sutton eventually told officers he had a gun and was detained.
