Two men indicted in separate shootings

YOUNGSTOWN — Two men charged with recent killings were indicted Thursday in the deaths.

Steve W. Green III, 24, of Birch Street, was indicted in aggravated murder and a gun specification in the Oct. 8 shooting death of his former girlfriend, Ashley Lockhart, 25, outside of the Compass West apartments in Austintown.

Green also was indicted on murder with a gun specification, tampering with evidence and misdemeanor domestic violence.

Lockhart had called 911 after she and Green argued, but the 911 call taker heard six shots through the phone line and then screaming and realized that Lockhart had been shot.

Green and Lockhart dated for eight years before they broke up about a year before the killing, a friend of Lockhart’s told the Vindicator. Lockhart also was from Youngstown.

Also indicted Thursday was John L. Ellis III, 64, on two counts of murder with gun specifications, felonious assault with a gun specification and tampering with evidence.

Campbell police said Ellis shot Jerome Pruitt, 70, once in the torso and once in the arm in the front yard of a home in the 100 block of Gordon Avenue at about 6 p.m. Oct. 25.

Campbell police detectives said Ellis was taken into custody the next day by U.S. Marshals Service on counts of felonious assault and one count of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Police said neither Pruitt nor Ellis lived at the home and the shooting stemmed from a disagreement between the two dating back to the 1970s. Police said they did not know what the specific dispute was about, according to TV-21, WFMJ. Police said doctors indicated at the time of the shooting that they expected Pruitt to survive the shooting.
