State nursing homes see rise in virus cases

A Warren nursing home that saw a spike in COVID-19 cases last week saw those numbers come back down this week, while a Youngstown nursing home continued to see a large number of cases this week.

The Gillette Nursing Home in Warren had six patient cases and one staff case last week, but it has no patient cases this week and two staff cases, according to data from the Ohio Department of Health.

The Canfield Healthcare Center Nursing Home on Canfield Road in Youngstown, meanwhile, has seven patient cases of the virus and three staff cases. It had six patient cases and one staff case last week.

Most other facilities in Trumbull and Mahoning and counties had very few cases this week. The data for Columbiana County shows two facilities with cases this week, but the numbers are low.

At nursing homes and assisted-living facilities across Ohio, meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 infections rose again this week. There are 806 patient cases this week, up from 752 last week and 539 two weeks ago. Staff cases are at 741 staff cases this week, up from 694 last week and 541 two weeks ago.

Three new deaths were associated with long-term care facilities, such as nursing homes and

assisted-living facilities, in the past week. There have been 296 in Mahoning County overall, up two deaths from last week. There have been 81 deaths in Columbiana County, up one from last week and 165 deaths in Trumbull County, the same as last week.

The number of staff cases of COVID-19 are elevated at the three area prisons with the private Northeast Ohio Correctional Center in Youngstown having nine staff cases this week and three inmate cases. The Ohio State Penitentiary in Youngstown has six staff cases and no inmate cases. The Trumbull Correctional Institution in Leavittsburg has five staff cases and no inmate cases.
