Legal Aid to mark 69th year

Staff report

Community Legal Aid will mark its 69th anniversary Tuesday.

Throughout its history, Legal Aid has worked to bolster the cause of justice and equity for low-income Ohioans throughout central northeast Ohio.

On its anniversary the nonprofit law firm is to share how the COVID-19 pandemic heightened the need for services.

Steven McGarrity, executive director of Legal Aid, said legal services have been critical in supporting Ohioans during the past two years.

“Our advocates helped residents stay in their homes, get legal protection from abusers, and make sure they got critical financial benefits like unemployment and economic impact payments,” he said.

McGarrity was quick to point out, however, that others played a large role in the firm’s impact.

“We can only celebrate these successes because of the support we received from funders, volunteers and community partners,” he said “Truly, we are celebrating the ‘community’ of Legal Aid.”

In addition to highlighting the firm’s impact during the pandemic, Legal Aid is sharing updates about the organization’s advocacy priorities and a glimpse into its plans for the year ahead.
