Columbiana man indicted in Beaver Township murder

YOUNGSTOWN — Gerald L. McMannis, 62, of Lesher Road in Columbiana, was indicted Thursday on charges of murder and grand theft of a motor vehicle in the death of Joseph Catullo, 50, in Beaver Township.

Catullo’s brother found Catullo’s body in the 4000 block of Lesher Road about 5 p.m. Nov. 17, police said. Court documents indicate Catullo was killed Nov. 16.

Police investigated Catullo’s death as a homicide and initially said they were looking for McMannis as a possible witness to the crime.

On Nov. 19, Poland Township police arrested McMannis after a warrant had been issued for his arrest. Police said McMannis was driving a truck taken from Catullo’s driveway when he was stopped by police. McMannis was taken to the Mahoning County jail, where he remains.

McMannis is likely to be arraigned in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court in a couple weeks.

McMannis was arraigned on a murder charge in Mahoning County Area Court in Canfield Nov. 23. He waived a preliminary hearing Nov. 30 in the Canfield court, and the case was bound over to a Mahoning County grand jury. Bond was set at $2 million.
