City man arrested on assault warrant

AUSTINTOWN — A Youngstown man is at the Mahoning County jail on a warrant filed from an August incident in which he is accused of throwing a punch at a township officer trying to arrest him outside a pub, according to a police report.

William R. McConnell, 27, of New Road, was arrested Friday, but the report was not made available until Tuesday. When McConnell was pulled over at Mahoning Avenue and Meridian Road, it was discovered there was a warrant for his arrest in an Aug. 12 incident, according to the police report.

On Aug. 12, McConnell was found by Sgt. Gregory Brinsko and patrolman Brad McFadden outside Barry Dyngles Pub on Raccoon Road around 10 p.m. highly emotional, but not violent, according to the police report. McConnell was drunk and hugging people in the pub before going outside. He was saying things such as, “I’m gonna die young.”

Once surrounded by the officers, he stated: “Is this it?”

The officers began to circle around McConnell and he reacted by throwing a punch toward Brinsko, according to the police report. Brinsko was not struck.

The officer then used a Taser on McConnell, and he placed his hands behind his back, apologizing. The police report states McConnell’s actions were deemed “unpredictable” and it looked as if he was “planning to run.”

The incident in August ended with a mental health evaluation for which McConnell was taken to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. His bond is set at $25,000 and he remains at the Mahoning County jail.
