Trafficker gets 92-month sentence

Case involved runaway minor from Youngstown

YOUNGSTOWN — A Warren man this week received a 92-month federal prison term on a conviction of conspiracy to commit sex trafficking of a minor.

Derwin Norman Jr., 26, formerly of Autumn Drive, pleaded to an amended charge April 13 after his attorney, David Betras, worked out an agreement with federal prosecutors.

U.S. Judge Benita Y. Pearson of the Northern Ohio District Court also ordered Norman to pay $5,100 in special court costs.

According to court documents, the offense took place between Feb. 27, 2017, and March 8, 2017, and the victim was younger than 18.

In his memo to the court before sentencing, Betras wrote Norman had a life of drug and alcohol addiction and his criminal life began at age 14. Betras wrote Norman’s addiction made him unable to control his behavior or resist his intense impulses.

Norman’s case involved a suspected robbery that Niles police investigated on March 8, 2017, at 164 Wade St., where a 15-year-old girl reported missing out of Youngstown had jumped out of a window.
